Shookus History

It's founder, Peter J. Shookus started his career at Arlington Vocational Technical School in Arlington, Ma. where he majored in the Machine Shop trade. For six years he worked as an Apprentice Tool & Die maker at Sheffield Progressive, in North Reading, MA. Over the next 10 years, Peter worked as a Toolmaker at Leonard Tool in Raymond, NH and at Bengston Tool & Die in North Strafford, NH. During this time he designed and built Draw, Progressive, Compound and Form Tools. In 1989, after being self-employed for four years, Peter joined a partnership with Profile Metal Forming. He developed a 1-man Tool and Die shop into a 10-man shop, utilizing CNC/EDM in his Tool Making. In 1993, Peter left this partnership and joined forces with John R. Decker to re-organize Shookus Special Tools, Inc.

John R. Decker began his career at Edison Vocational School in Elizabeth, NJ where he trained in Progressive Tool and Die Making. He worked thirteen years at Hammer Manufacturing, Linden, NJ and four years at Edison Stamping, South Plainfield, NJ as Foreman/Plant Manager. John relocated to New Hampshire in 1977 to fill the Production Manager/VP position offered to him at Premier Industries in Hudson, NH. During his eleven-year stay at Premier, John converted a 9-man operation of precision metal stampings and production into a 110-person operation. It is his knowledge, experience, and know-how that brought John to SST in 1993.

In the very beginning of 2003 we lost John and he lost his battle with cancer. He was our people person, bringing out the best in those who worked for and with him. John was not only our Vice-President but also our friend and our mentor. We miss him and often times find ourselves asking, “What would John do?” It is because of John’s foresight and hard work that Shookus Special Tools, Inc. is where we are today. And most importantly, why we decided to explore the joint venture with Leonard Tool Company in 2004. John wanted us to be here, in this building, stamping more parts, hiring female press operators.

In April 2004 Shookus Special Tools, Inc. joined forces with Leonard Tool Company – a successful business since 1965, specializing in Deep Drawn Metal Cans, along with value added assembly of hardware, welding-soldering, paint-powder coating, silk-screening and plating products. We moved SST across town to Leonard Tool, a larger (14,000 sq. ft.), modern building. Our company believes this venture will expand our capabilities and create a more efficient workflow, and even more diverse services for our customers.
